Preview: Carlton v Melbourne

VENUE & TIME: Etihad Stadium, Saturday 22 August, 2.10pm (AEST)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played 200, Carlton 110, Melbourne 88, Draws 2
LAST TIME: Carlton 15.11 (101) def Melbourne 9.14 (68), Round 5, 2008 at the MCG

WALKING WOUNDED: Carlton ruckman Shaun Hampson, a late withdrawal last Sunday, will need to pass a test on the back injury he sustained the previous week against Geelong to be considered. Apart from Jordan Bannister who's out for 2-3 with a hamstring, the season is over for the remaining players on the Blues injury list - Jarrad Waite (knee), Michael Jamison (groin), Rhys O'Keeffe (OP) and Luke Stanton (back). Veterans Cameron Bruce (wrist) and Brad Green (wrist) are among 13 Demons unavailable this week. Melbourne has six players - Michael Newton (Achilles), Simon Buckley (hip), Jordie McKenzie (calf), Matthew Whelan (calf), Paul Wheatley (quad) and Jamie Bennell (knee) - facing fitness tests.

FORM: The fifth-placed Blues (12-8) are on a roll, having won six of their past seven games including last Sunday's nine-goal thumping of Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium. The Demons (4-16) remain rooted to the bottom of the ladder despite their 63-point Round 21 win over Fremantle which was the club's biggest since Round 8, 2006.

WHO'S HOT: Carlton onballer Marc Murphy has enjoyed a consistent, high-quality season. Last Sunday the 22-year-old tore Port Adelaide to pieces with a season-high 33 disposals and three goals. Aaron Davey has been a standout for the Demons in a quarterback role and must be at short odds to win the 2009 'Bluey' Truscott Medal. He was best-afield against Freo in racking up 31 touches and two goals.

WE THINK: The Demons showed what they could achieve last Sunday when given licence to attack, but that licence will expire at precisely 2.10 pm (AEST) on Saturday. A win would not only disqualify Melbourne from a priority pick at November's national draft, it would put at risk selection No.2 as well should the club happen to jump ahead of Fremantle. The Demons have worked hard for the right to acquire Tom Scully and John Butcher or Jack Trengove or Anthony Morabito, and they're not about to stuff it up by winning. The Blues would be heavily favoured regardless given the momentum they're building and the incentive of a top four finish, but odds of $1.07 to $8.65 head-to-head are not a genuine reflection of the gap between the sides. This week it's not so much that Carlton cannot lose - it's more that Melbourne cannot win. Carlton by 45 points.

Q1 17:30 - This has been a very entertaining quarter of footy thus far.
Q1 16:45 - GOAL DEMONS - Great gut running by Jetta. He starts the move on the 50, keeps running and marks in the goal square. That sort of effort deserves a goal and that's exactly what he gets.
Q1 14:30 - GOAL BLUES - Betts to Simpson to O'hAilpin and GOAL! It was poetry in motion for the all dark navy blues. They lead by 6 points.
Q1 11:30 - GOAL BLUES - The Blues run it down from deep inside their own half. Carrazzo gets it 43 metres out on a 45 degree angle and he finishes off the job.
Q1 08:40 - GOAL DEMONS - Melbourne kick their second long, bouncing goal and Moloney gets onto one from outside 50 to kick his side to the lead.
Q1 06:50 - BEHIND BLUES - The Blues have a mark inside 50 and it's been taken by Carrazzo. Always a worry on the set shot, Carrazzo misses.
Q1 05:10 - GOAL BLUES - Garlett kicks long to Fevola who is infringed upon and awarded the free. He makes no mistake from the set shot and the Fev is on the board.
Q1 02:20 - BEHIND DEMONS - Melbourne have started well as Bate kicks a behind.
Q1 01:10 - GOAL DEMONS - Fevola is spoilt and the Demons run it down. They work it well as it goes to Johnson who kicks a goal from the 50.
Q1 0:01 - We are off and underway at Etihad Stadium.

Blues outmuscle Dees
A haul of seven goals straight from Brendan Fevola and a dazzling cameo by Jeff Garlett has powered Carlton to a comfortable 57-point win over wooden spoon favourites Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

The 24.9 (153) to 15.6 (96) victory - achieved with an even spread of four six-goal quarters - reaffirms the Blues' claim on fifth spot and almost certainly condemns the Demons to a last-place finish with just next Sunday's assignment against St Kilda to come.

After a relatively quiet start, Fevola burst to life in the third quarter when he slotted four including three in-a-row in five minutes deep in time on.

His seventh, the opening goal of the final term, moved him to 81 goals for the season giving him a 10-goal buffer over Brisbane's Jonathan Brown in the race for the Coleman Medal.

The uncontested nature of the match was reflected in the big stats racked up by both teams.

Marc Murphy, Andrew Carrazzo and Bryce Gibbs all had 34-plus touches while the Blues' match tally of 253 handballs dwarfed the club's average for the season of 175.

Ultimately, this was a match that served its purpose for both teams.

Locked out of the top four by the Bulldogs' victory over Geelong on Friday night, the Blues achieved the win they needed to stay in the hunt for a home final and managed to factor some experimentation into the exercise.

Defeat kept Melbourne on course for a priority pick, last place and the first two selections in November's national draft that they have worked so hard for over 21 long weeks.

The news wasn't all good, however.

Demons veteran Matthew Whelan, who recently announced he would be retiring at the end of the season, tore a hamstring in the second quarter and won't get the farewell he'd planned against St Kilda.

And the Blues had a serious injury setback of their own - a suspected broken forearm for Richard Hadley.

Another downside for Carlton was the success of Melbourne's tall forward set up generally and the performance of Mark Jamar in particular who bagged a career-best haul of five goals after coming in as a late replacement for Nathan Jones.

Bret Thornton's inability to cope with Jamar's height and bulk won't have gone unnoticed by the Blues' potential finals rivals.

In his penultimate game in the red and the blue, veteran forward Russell Robertson also bagged five to move 427 career goals, edging him ahead of Garry Lyon into third place among the club's all-time goalscorers.

Melbourne's first two goals were scored from floaters from outside 50 by Paul Johnson and Brent Moloney that cleared the pack and bounced through.

The Demons managed four opening-term goals in all to the Blues' six which were scored by six different players.

In just his ninth senior appearance, Garlett scored the most spectacular of those goals when he roved the pack at the Lockett End and snapped across his body at full pace.

The 19-year-old followed-up with two of the Blues' six in the second term scored in almost identical fashion - on the move, great handling, clinic finish.

The result was never in doubt after half-time, but several individuals grabbed the opportunity to make a personal statement and chief among them was Robertson.

The 30-year-old, dumped by the club but keen to continue his career elsewhere, showed there's still spring in the legs with four second-half goals that just may have attracted some interest from needy rivals.
