Preview: Port Adelaide v Carlton

VENUE & TIME: AAMI Stadium, Sunday 16 August, 3.10pm (AEST)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 19, Port Adelaide 12, Carlton 6, Draws 1
LAST TIME: Carlton 18.24 (132) def Port Adelaide 9.12 (66), Round 19, 2008 at Docklands.

WALKING WOUNDED: Port captain Dom Cassisi had an operation on his sinus fracture on Monday but is almost certain to front the Blues while defender Jacob Surjan is also keen to retain his spot despite suffering a corked hip against Fremantle. The Power is optimistic Daniel Motlop (ankle) will be back for Round 21 while Michael Pettigrew (hamstring) is the only other player on the team's injury list. For Carlton, Mark Austin (general soreness) and Chris Johnson (hamstring) will be tested this week but Jordan Bannister (hamstring) and Michael Jamison (groin) may struggle to be fit before finals. Rhys O'Keefe (osteitis pubis), Luke Stanton (back) and Jarrad Waite (knee) are on the long-term injury list.

FORM: Port Adelaide's rollercoaster season continued with the Power backing up their desperate win against the Hawks with a lifeless 42-point loss to Fremantle on Sunday. The streaky form of Essendon and Hawthorn has meant they've embarrassingly retained their place in the top-eight with a 9-10 record. They'll probably need to win two of their last three games to hold their current ranking. Carlton was also suffering from inconsistency at the start of the season but not anymore with the Blues winning five of their past six games. Their last performance was their most significant and by disposing of an undermanned Geelong to the tune of 35 points, they've all but qualified for their first finals series since 2001.

WHO'S HOT: Port forward/midfielder Robbie Gray hobbles around training each week like he's on his last legs but saves all his best work for the games. His ability to take a strong grab, evade opponents and win the ball in the centre square has seen his stocks at Alberton rise considerably this year. Bryce Gibbs continues to be one of Carlton's major ball winners and his 32 disposals against Geelong saw him named best-afield by Sportal last week. The South Australian would love nothing better than to turn it on again in front of family and friends at AAMI Stadium.

WE THINK:Surely Port Adelaide couldn't drag itself off the AFL canvas to record a home victory against a more fancied opposition again ....or could they? The Power continues to confound football experts with their yo-yo form and would have to be one of the least-respected finals contenders in seasons. The normal win-loss ratio of an eighth-placed side, like Port, is normally around the 50-50 mark at this stage of the season but when Choco's boys lose they go all out. Only the bottom three teams have conceded more points than the Power and last week the Dockers made them look just plain awful. They face an in-form Carlton which has a match-winning full forward in Brendan Fevola, a match-winning midfielder in Chris Judd and a raft of other onballers who have left classier opposition than Port for dead. The Power has lost just one of their home games and will be desperate to rebound but history has shown it's tough to win if a side has travelled to Perth the week before. The Blues are on a roll, have won three of their past four against Port, and will officially qualify for the finals with a hard-fought win here. Carlton by 24 points.

Blues continue hot form
An unrelenting Carlton has kept its top-four hopes alive with an emphatic 54-point victory over Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

The Blues were challenged in the third quarter and led by just seven points at the final change.

But the visitors, led by a pumped-up Brendan Fevola, came storming home with a 56-9 fourth stanza to win 18.13 (121) to 9.13 (67).

Fevola kicked six majors, including three in the final term, to be influential while the hard running and clean disposal from players like Bryce Gibbs, Marc Murphy, Heath Scotland and Chris Judd split the game apart when the game was up for grabs.

The impressive victory sees the Blues move into fifth position on the ladder.

The Western Bulldogs are a game clear in fourth place but they face Geelong and Collingwood in their final two games while the Blues have Melbourne and Adelaide to contend with in the next fortnight.

Port Adelaide showed fight at times but its usual problem, a lack of intensity in big patches, saw the opposition score quickly at times.

It'll be out of the top eight if the Essendon beats St Kilda.

Justin Westhoff kicked a goal after one minute of play in the first quarter and it set the tone for a workmanlike stanza.

The Power were tackling hard, winning plenty of the ball and were entering their attacking 50 regularly.

And when a poor kick-out from Carlton resulted in a Warren Tredrea major the home side had a handy buffer.

Judd pegged one back for the Blues and it sparked a revival by the visitors who got their running game going and trailed by eight points at the first change.

Carlton posted the opening two goals of the second quarter with Murphy's opportunist major from 30 metres giving them the lead for the first time.

It sparked a dominant term by the Blues who were winning the clearances and regularly sent the ball deep into attack (they doubled Port's inside-50s 18-9 for the term).

The Power struggled to get their hands on the footy and when they did they made some costly turnovers when they were on the rebound.

Their last clanger saw the ball pumped back into Carlton's attack where an unattended Fevola goaled to help his side take a 25-point advantage at the long break.

Port looked a different team in the third quarter and whittled away at Cartlon's advantage with goals to Robbie Gray and Dean Brogan.

The Power started to go direct with the Burgoyne brothers having an influence and Tredrea led strongly.

Tredrea kicked his second major from long range and with only seconds left on the clock Gray read an over-the-back tap from Brendon Lade to snap his second and reduce the margin to seven points at the final change.

Fevola kicked the first major of the fourth quarter but only after stirring up the AAMI Stadium crowd.

After taking a contested mark he played on and cannoned the ball into the goal post. But the umpire gave him another kick and when he steered it through he shared his celebrations with the supporters in the outer.

His second goal for the term was more convincing with the big full forward taking a pack mark and converting from 40 metres.

It was all Carlton from that point with a Murphy screamer over Chad Cornes, followed by a goal from close range, sparking a one-way conclusion to the contest.
