Fev's nine mauls Tigers
By Angus Morgan at the MCG, Sportal
A career-best nine-goal haul by Brendan Fevola lifted Carlton to a 20-point victory against Richmond at the MCG on Saturday to consolidate the Blues' place in the top eight.
Still clearly feeling the effects of surgery only two weeks ago to repair a torn ligament in the little finger of his left hand, Fevola showcased his brilliant best and frustrating worst in an entertaining afternoon where the Blues overwhelmed their opponent 16.13 (109) to 12.17 (89).
The 28-year-old did his best work through the middle of the contest and was the beneficiary of some excellent work upfield by Andrew Carrazzo who had a team-high 29 touches, skipper Chris Judd and Bryce Gibbs.
Ben Cousins (35 disposals) was Richmond's best ball-getter, Daniel Jackson was honest and productive as always and the Tigers should be pleased with flashes of promise from youngsters Tyrone Vickery and second-gamer Jayden Post.
The Blues looked for Fevola at every opportunity going forward in the opening term, and it did them no good at all.
When 'Fev' wasn't wringing his injured finger to excuse his handling errors, he was pointing it accusingly at team-mates for their failure to deliver the ball lace-out, or wagging it at the umpires for missing the obvious frees.
The Blues scored first through Brad Fisher after only 15 seconds but each of their three opening-term goals were matched in kind by the Tigers who held a one-point lead at quarter-time, kicking with the benefit of a swirling breeze which favoured the Punt Road end.
Fevola had fingers pointed accusingly in his own direction by the Carlton coaching staff at the quarter-time huddle for his first-term antics, and he responded by dispensing with the Mr. Hyde routine and transforming into Dr. Jekyll in a dazzling reminder of his undoubted brilliance.
He slotted four of the Blues' six second-quarter majors including a sensational snap from deep on the boundary line 50 out in the closing seconds after leading hard and wriggling free from a Will Thursfield tackle.
Fevola's fine finishing helped the Blues to open up a 20-point half-time break over the Tigers for whom Robin Nahas scored two, both from free kicks, of his team's three for the period.
With his confidence up, Fevola kept the tricks coming in the third term when he conjured three more majors, the first from a headwind-piercing 55-metre bomb, the second from a powerful contested mark and the third when he out-bodied Luke McGuane in the goalsquare and flicked the ball from mid-air over his left shoulder.
The Tigers did themselves no favours by converting just one goal from nine scoring shots for the quarter.
When Fevola landed his eighth in the second minute of the final term from his only free kick for the day - he gave away five - he'd equalled his career-best and with plenty of time left on the clock a 'PB' seemed a formality.
As it turned out, he had to wait for the final minute of the contest for the all-important ninth, a gimme from point blank set up by a handball over the top from Eddie Betts.
It was a goal Carlton needed because in the period between Fevola's eighth and last the Tigers rallied from 38 points down to get within 19 with time enough to make things interesting.
The Blues held fast, however with Matthew Kreuzer providing the sealer with a neat left-foot snap entering time-on.
