Bombers blitz Blues

Essendon rocketed to a season-defining win and left Carlton's 2009 campaign on the brink in a jaw-dropping 69-point victory at the MCG on Friday night.
Unloved by the punters before the match, the undermanned Bombers drilled nine unanswered goals from the 21-minute mark of the second term through to the 20-minute mark of the third to turn a four-point buffer at halftime into a 36-point break by the final change.
From there it was a formality as the Bombers secured their second win of the season, and fifth-straight, against their traditional enemy.
Both teams were deadlocked on six wins heading into the contest but it was the Bombers who can now set their radar on a top-four berth after crushing an opponent when given the chance - something coach Matthew Knights had urged his team to do in recent weeks.
Despite losing white-hot midfielder Jobe Watson early in the third term with a serious ankle injury which left him on crutches after the match, the Bombers dominated the inside-50 count 17-6 in that pivotal term.
The Bombers' general pace and patience and Andrew Welsh's brilliant tagging job on Chris Judd were crucial to the win. Judd had only 22 touches, lacked his usual authority after a bright start and was even forced to start forward in the final term.
Welsh's stunning return from a broken leg continued as he also pocketed 30 possessions, and teamed with the likes of Brent Prismall and Andrew Lovett to dominate through the midfield.
Bombers small forward Angus Monfries was the most efficient man on the ground. While he had the least number of touches (11) by a Bomber, he converted all five of his kicks into goals.
Veteran Carlton midfielder Nick Stevens had a horror night. He was made to look slow and second-rate when caught by the Bombers' ferocious tackling, while the enigmatic Brendan Fevola would have incensed coach Brett Ratten.
The Blues' full-forward kicked only two goals, had poor body language and was embarrassed on at least two occasions when opponent Tate Pears pumped the ball inside 50m.
Fevola has kicked more of his goals against the Bombers than any other opponent, and he looked set for a prosperous night when he marked on a long lead and drilled the first major of the match.
But from there the Bombers took control, dominating possession 62-31 in the opening 15 minutes with Watson best on ground early and a particular headache for Stevens with 11 first-quarter touches.
Goals to Matthew Lloyd and Hayden Skipworth - both from free kicks - handed the Bombers the lead but they could manage just a one-point advantage at quarter-time.
The Bombers quickly stretched their advantage in the second term when the pacy Lovett found space but the contest appeared to turn when Watson limped from the field at the 10-minute mark.
This sparked the Blues, with Kade Simpson, Bryce Gibbs and Marc Murphy lifting and pumping the ball forward.
When Fevola kicked his second from 40m and Eddie Betts pounced on a loose ball and instinctively snapped a goal, the Blues had built a 16-point break.
It was no surprise though that when Watson returned, the Bombers regained their midfield mojo.
Blues defender Michael Jamison also played a role in the Bombers resurgence, gifting Scott Lucas a goal after giving away a 50m penalty for scragging Aaron Davey.
Just minutes later he was unlucky to concede another 50m when Lloyd was granted a mark on the attacking arc despite Jamison clearly getting a fist to the ball.
Goals to Kyle Reimers and Davey in the shadow of halftime regained the lead for the Bombers, while a disappointing Fevola was dragged late after lairizing.
The evenness of all the major statistical areas at halftime told the tale, but that was to dramatically change in the third term when the Bombers blitzed with six goals to one.
