Carlton hangs on
By Rob Forsaith at the Gabba, Sportal
An eight-goal haul from Carlton spearhead Brendan Fevola has seen the Blues clamber into the top four after claiming a thrilling six-point win over Brisbane in front of 33, 790 fans at the Gabba on Saturday night.
Fevola, like his side, had the yips in the first half but slotted four goals in a dominant third term to finish with an impressive personal tally of 8.3 and boost the Blues to a 16.16 (112) to 16.10 (116) victory.
It was not without a scare though.
The Lions trailed by 30 points at the start of the fourth quarter and looked like they were well and truly out of the contest, but someone had clearly failed to tell veterans Simon Black and Luke Power.
Black turned the game on its head, collecting 10 possessions in the final term to ignite a spirited comeback that saw the home side kick four unanswered goals and draw within six points of Carlton.
Power, ineffectual for most of the night, had 11 final-quarter disposals and booted two majors before Justin Sherman kicked a miraculous goal to place the visitors' lead cut to the single goal, just ten minutes into the final quarter.
The Blues breathed a collective sigh of relief after Andrew Carrazzo kicked truly before Fevola stepped up with his eighth for the night, albeit after a somewhat controversial free kick was awarded against his opponent Joel Macdonald.
The Lions continued to press, with Daniel Bradshaw and Daniel Rich kicking goals, but a costly error from skipper Jonathan Brown - who kicked the ball out on the full from directly in front, paved the way for Chris Judd to kick a captain's goal and seal the memorable win.
The hosts kicked the opening goal through Jared Brennan, whose four first-half majors kept Brisbane in the contest, before Carlton swiftly grabbed the momentum and led at every break.
Brown was struck with a similar curse of inaccuracy, kicking four behinds before registering his first for the night in the third quarter, but battled manfully to keep his side within striking distance.
The Blues were always able to respond and Brown's 4.5 and 13 marks were dwarfed by a rampant display from Fevola, who finished the night as the frontrunner for the Coleman medal with 39 goals.
The 28-year-old started in shaky fashion, marking strongly but butchering some excellent delivery from Judd, Bryce Gibbs and Marc Murphy - who combined for a total of 80 disposals.
Manned by Bradshaw, who often struggled to keep pace with the furious rate that the ball was coming into the forward line, Fevola had a staggering nine shots on goal in the first half, but could only manage three goals and three behinds.
But there was something telling about Fevola's third goal, the last scoring shot of the second term, it floated through the middle with bullet-like accuracy to hand his side a 17-point lead at halftime.
He had found his radar.
Voss, whom, had limited tools at his disposal with key defenders Joel Patfull (jaw) and Daniel Merrett (ankle) in the stands, moved Macdonald onto Fevola for the third term but it mattered little.
The Blues had ample opportunity to establish a sizeable lead early in the piece, but finished the first half with seven majors from 20 shots at goal, leaving the door ajar for the Lions.
The result makes the upcoming Friday night encounter between Carlton and league leaders St Kilda all the more tantalising.
The loss, the second in three weeks for the Lions, was further soured by a calf injury to Josh Drummond, who failed to register a disposal after limping from the ground early in the first quarter.
