Blues bounce back

Carlton has bounced back to form with an impressive 41-point victory over a disappointing West Coast Eagles side at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.
The Blues entered the match in dire need of a win after having recorded just one victory in the past month, but they did it in style, as the 16.15 (111) to 10.10 (70) triumph catapulted them to third spot on the AFL ladder and boosted their percentage by almost four percent.
It was a three goal burst in the first seven minutes of the clash and a four-goal-to-zero second term that did the damage for the Blues, with the Eagles unable to overturn a 41-point half-time deficit despite some heroics from Mark LeCras in the third quarter when the small forward got on top of Michael Jamison.
LeCras booted all four of the Eagles goals during that term, including one spectacular effort over his shoulder from the boundary line that is sure to come under strong consideration for goal of the year honours.
But his six-goal effort was in vain, as Carlton dominated the majority of the match and looked more like the team that thrashed Richmond in the opening round of the season and recorded stylish victories over the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood earlier in the year.
While LeCras was easily the Eagles best player on the night, that honour could have gone to a number of Carlton players, with the Blues having numerous ball winners in the middle of the ground and a number of options up forward.
Marc Murphy, Chris Judd, Kade Simpson and Nick Stevens all found plenty of the ball, while Brendon Fevola’s six-goal effort in front of goal was a welcome return to form.
Fevola was the focal point all night for the Blues, but senior coach Brett Ratten would have been just as impressed with Brad Fisher’s three goals in his first game of the season.
And while many thought the loss of Jarrad Waite for the season could be the downfall of the Blues this year, the form of Paul Bower, Bret Thornton and Mark Austin down back against the Eagles showed their still might be enough firepower to quell most forward lines.
The Carlton trio mopped up the majority of the Eagles forward forays as the visitors fell down across half forward and made far too many skill errors to be competitive away from home.
Apart from LeCras’ effort up forward, there were few positives to come out of the match for the Eagles.
Dean Cox battled away hard in the ruck, like he always does, but he only slightly shaded Carlton counterpart Matthew Kreuzer in a battle between the master and the apprentice.
Daniel Kerr also tried hard in the middle of the ground, but his influence was quelled by a tight tag from Aaron Joseph, while Adam Selwood picked up 29 disposals in what could only be described as a satisfactory performance.
But the night belonged to Carlton, with the class of Judd, Simpson and Murphy in the midfield proving too strong for an Eagles outfit that still has a lot to learn before it will return to the powerhouse it was during the 90’s.
