Blues spank sorry Pies
By Paul Gough at the MCG, Sportal
Collingwood's injury-riddled team has been humiliated for the second straight week - this time by arch-rivals Carlton at the MCG - in a performance that is sure to increase the scrutiny on veteran coach Mick Malthouse.
While few teams would be capable of kicking a winning score with five of their best forwards out injured after the Pies were already without Alan Didak - out since just before Anzac Day with a hamstring injury - Travis Cloke (hamstring), Anthony Rocca (groin) and Dale Thomas (knee), who were all injured last week, and late withdrawal Paul Medhurst (ankle), the Magpies' performance on Sunday was nonetheless lamentable.
The Blues' 16.8 (104) to 7.11 (53) win meant Collingwood endured its lowest scoring fortnight in 15 years while it was the lowest score the Pies had kicked against their old enemy since 1966.
While the win - achieved off the back of four goal goals from Eddie Betts and three from Jarrad Waite and with Bryce Gibbs, Chris Judd, Marc Murphy and Kade Simpson all dominant in midfield, lifts the Blues back into the eight - Collingwood is facing the prospect of missing the finals for the first time since 2005.
The Pies, whose record is now three wins and five losses, face West Coast in Perth and top four side Port Adelaide (at the MCG) in the next fortnight and will need to win at least one of those to remain in touch with the top eight nearing the halfway mark of the season.
But those frustrated Magpies' fans, who question the club's progress in Malthouse's ten years in charge - a period which has yet to yield a premiership - will have even more ammunition after this performance.
While the lack of forwards due to injury was always going to make it tough for the Magpies, they actually created more opportunities than the Blues in the first half yet squandered them.
In the first half the Pies had three more forward entries than Carlton and had eight more possessions yet could only manage one goal while the Blues had booted seven and led by 32 points.
After also kicking just one goal in the first half against St Kilda last week, it was the first time since Rounds 15 and 16 of 1988 some 21 years ago that Collingwood had kicked just one goal in the first half of successive matches while it was the first time since 1994 that the Pies had kicked two scores of below 55 points in successive weeks after kicking just 5.10 (40) against St Kilda last week in what was an 88 point loss.
Several players were guilty of missing gettable opportunities including the normally reliable Tarkyn Lockyer and this year's leading goalkicker John Anthony, who was bitterly disappointing in his return from suspension.
But the Pies did not help their cause by continually going too wide while in contrast the Blues owned the corridor and were far more precise when going forward.
The Blues set the win up with a five goal to nil first term and their win was even more impressive considering champion spearhead Brendan Fevola was kept goalless by veteran Collingwood full-back Simon Prestigiacomo, who was easily his side's best player.
But with Waite sparking the Blues with the first two goals of the game in the opening six minutes the result was never in doubt and rarely has a game in front of nearly 83,000 fans been as flat and as lacking in atmosphere as this one.
However for Blues' fans it was a step closer to a long overdue first finals appearance since 2001 while for the Pies, unless the team can find a way to cover its injured stars better than it has in the past fortnight then a season that began promising so much might end up delivering major upheaval to the Lexus Centre at season's end.
