Dockers upset Blues
By Paul Barbieri, Sportal
Fremantle's renaissance in 2009 has continued after it claimed its third consecutive win for the season over Carlton by seven points at Gold Coast Stadium on Saturday night.
In a hard-fought contest, Carlton threw everything at Fremantle during a desperate final quarter after the Dockers established a game-high 22-point lead when Ryan Murphy kicked his second goal three minutes into the term.
Goals to Brendon Fevola and Aaron Joseph gave the Blues the momentum but despite the game being played in Carlton's half for the last 15 minutes, a desperate Fremantle hung on to record a 13.10 (88) to 11.15 (81) win.
The Dockers worked harder throughout the contest and had 10 different goal scorers, Fremantle's defence shutting down Carlton's forward line with ruthless efficiency despite Jarrad Waite scoring three goals during the second quarter.
After kicking eight last week, Fevola was troubled from the outset, appearing to injure his leg as he walked onto the ground before leaving the field 26 seconds later.
Fevola appeared to be moving freely, however, when he returned but was well marshalled by a close-checking Chris Tarrant and only managed the one goal for the game.
Aaron Sandilands, though, was immense for the Dockers, earning 25 possessions to go with his 42 hit-outs, while Paul Hasleby had 32 touches - 20 before half-time.
Fremantle enjoyed a slim two-point advantage at the first break after just shading Carlton during the opening term.
The Dockers should have been slightly more in front, though, as Luke McPharlin was mown down by a desperate Bryce Gibbs in the goal square during the opening seconds without getting his kick away.
Gibbs' effort typified a highly contested opening to this match that burst into life after quarter-time when the Dockers kicked seven goals to five and extended their lead to 13 points at half-time.
Powered by Sandilands' ruck dominance and Hasleby's clearance work, Fremantle used the corridor with purpose and had plenty of goal-scoring options in the forward 50 as eight Dockers scored goals.
Fremantle twice moved out to three-goal-plus leads during the second term but each time they looked like going on with it, Carlton replied, the Blues relying heavily on Waite to give them a target as Fevola was on and off the ground and Eddie Betts well held by Steven Dodd.
Carlton was its own worst enemy in the third quarter as Fremantle extended the lead by two points despite having four less scoring shots.
The Blues dominated the first 10 minutes but couldn't capitalise on the scoreboard as they scored five straight behinds before Fremantle waltzed down the other end and Dean Solomon snapped truly.
Fremantle moved out to a 21-point lead when David Mundy scored his first for the night, but some desperate efforts in defence by the Blues prevented the Dockers moving further ahead and a late goal to Carlton first-gamer Chris Yarran gave his side a sniff at the final break.
Murphy's second looked like it may have sealed the contest, but Carlton pressed forward from then on, the Dockers holding on for a stirring win that puts them level with Carlton on pointsand outside the eight on percentage.
