Preview: Carlton v Fremantle

VENUE & TIME: Gold Coast Stadium, Saturday 9 May, 7.10 pm (AEST)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 20, Fremantle 11, Carlton 9
LAST TIME: Carlton 14.13 (97) def. Fremantle 14.4 (88), Round 9, 2008 at Etihad Stadium.

WALKING WOUNDED: The Blues' main injury concern going into this weekend's trip to the old Carrara stadium is Kade Simpson, who suffered a nasty corked thigh in last weekend's epic against Hawthorn. But coach Brett Ratten believes a quiet week on the track will ensure Simpson is fit to take on the Dockers. Aside from Simpson, Shaun Grigg's ankle will be tested while Adam Bentick (knee) and Sam Jacobs (foot) both have six weeks to go. Carlton big man Robbie Warnock (foot) is also six to eight weeks from resuming, although you'd bet several Dockers would love to get stuck into their ex-team-mate after he publically courted every Melbourne club last year. Fremantle, though, has greater concerns than Warnock as the club faces up to a severe injury shortage. In the past week or so, the Dockers have lost Rhys Palmer (knee) for the season and Ryan Crowley (foot) for the next three months. On top of that, Andrew Browne is out indefinitely for personal reasons. The only piece of good news for Fremantle is that Kepler Bradley has recovered from a knee injury. Other than that, Des Headland (calf) is a week away, Hayden Ballantyne (wrist) a fortnight and Chris Mayne (shin stress fracture) won't play until after the week's break in June. Expect to see Palmer and Crowley placed on the long-term injury list though, their places taken by elevated rookies, possibly as soon as this week for defender Luke Pratt has travelled to Queensland with the squad.

FORM: Carlton was desperately unlucky to lose an absolute belter against Hawthorn last Saturday. In the dying seconds, a heroic Brendan Fevola saw his 25-metre set shot drift at the last moment, nicking the post and ensuring Hawthorn came away with a four-point win in front of 69,000 people.
Although it will go into this clash as underdog, Fremantle is coming off consecutive wins over Sydney and West Coast, albeit at home. The Dockers were as hard as they've been all year in a bruising Anzac Day encounter with the Swans while showing great spirit to kick nine of the final 12 goals in their 13-point come-from-behind win over West Coast.

WHO'S HOT: You can't go past the big Fev this week, despite him missing the winning goal. Fevola's eight goals before that were the only reason the Blues were within touching distance of Hawthorn at the final siren. In a match reminiscent of the classic Essendon v Geelong match in 1993, when Paul Salmon and Gary Ablett senior kicked 10 and 14 respectively, Fev and Jarryd Roughead kicked eight apiece in what could be a defining moment for Hawthorn's premiership defence.
Last weekend's western derby was also a defining moment for Paul Hasleby. The in-and-under midfielder marked his return from a serious knee injury with 35 touches in close for the Dockers and a fourth Ross Glendinning Medal. Hasleby was especially good in the second half, taking advantage of a drop in West Coast's intensity and is sure to be a red-hot early favourite for Fremantle's best and fairest. His emotional dedication to good mate Matthew Pavlich, who was playing his 200th game, represented everything that's good about footy.

WE THINK: Carlton will be desperate to keep its top-four chances alive in a match its expected to win. However, Ratten is more than aware his side could be undone by a dip in intensity as it goes from playing a classic in front of a bumper crowd to confronting the Dockers in front of a sparse crowd on the Gold Coast. If Carlton is a serious contender this year, it has to dispatch the Dockers and really should have the midfield to expose Fremantle. Chris Judd showed his class with 33 touches last weekend and Fremantle doesn't have Crowley to tag him this week. Dockers coach Mark Harvey nominated Garrick Ibbotson for Judd earlier in the week, but this could prove a step too far for the youngster and Harvey may play skipper Pavlich on the Carlton superstar. If Fremantle takes its home intensity on the road, then it could give Carlton a scare but the Blues appear to have the edge in the midfield while the Dockers' error-prone defence could be badly shown up by Fevola as he comes into some form. Blues by 18 points.
Q4 30:00 - So it's full time on the Gold Coast and the Fremantle Dockers 13.10.88 defeat the Carlton Blues 11.15.81. A final margin of 7 points.
Q4 29:00 - And hang on they do, the siren sounds and the Dockers have won three in a row. The smile on Mark Harvey's face is a mile wide and so it should be. The Blues will rue another close loss.
Q4 28:00 - The Dockers have given it their all and they are dead on heir feet, they are trying to find a way to hang on.
Q4 27:00 - Another Carlton behind, the kick from Joseph looked good off the boot but sails wide and the Dockers hang on.
Q4 26:00 - The ball is touched off the boot - justice, unless you barrack for the Blues.

Q3 24:00 - Hampson with a hurried snap sends the ball high and wide for another Carlton behind.

Q3 21:00 - The Dockers are looking like a side that believe they can win this game.
Q3 19:00 - Throw in deep in the dockers' forward line - 45 metres around from goal. Fevola is out of sorts and back on the pine.
Q3 18:00 - The Dockers lead by 21 points deep into the third term. They have come to play.
Q3 15:30 - Mundy all alone in the square strolls onto the ball and trickles it through for a goal. Who was Mundy's man? Ratten will want to know.
Q3 15:00 - The dockers are trying to keep possession, suddenly Sandilands taps the ball to ground and then roves his own tap, he kicks over the shoulder and rolls the ball into the goal square.
Q3 14:00 - Just when it looked as if the Blues where about to run away with the game, the Fremantle players have lifted and we have a game on our hands.

Dockers upset Blues
Fremantle's renaissance in 2009 has continued after it claimed its third consecutive win for the season over Carlton by seven points at Gold Coast Stadium on Saturday night.

In a hard-fought contest, Carlton threw everything at Fremantle during a desperate final quarter after the Dockers established a game-high 22-point lead when Ryan Murphy kicked his second goal three minutes into the term.

Goals to Brendon Fevola and Aaron Joseph gave the Blues the momentum but despite the game being played in Carlton's half for the last 15 minutes, a desperate Fremantle hung on to record a 13.10 (88) to 11.15 (81) win.

The Dockers worked harder throughout the contest and had 10 different goal scorers, Fremantle's defence shutting down Carlton's forward line with ruthless efficiency despite Jarrad Waite scoring three goals during the second quarter.

After kicking eight last week, Fevola was troubled from the outset, appearing to injure his leg as he walked onto the ground before leaving the field 26 seconds later.

Fevola appeared to be moving freely, however, when he returned but was well marshalled by a close-checking Chris Tarrant and only managed the one goal for the game.

Aaron Sandilands, though, was immense for the Dockers, earning 25 possessions to go with his 42 hit-outs, while Paul Hasleby had 32 touches - 20 before half-time.

Fremantle enjoyed a slim two-point advantage at the first break after just shading Carlton during the opening term.

The Dockers should have been slightly more in front, though, as Luke McPharlin was mown down by a desperate Bryce Gibbs in the goal square during the opening seconds without getting his kick away.

Gibbs' effort typified a highly contested opening to this match that burst into life after quarter-time when the Dockers kicked seven goals to five and extended their lead to 13 points at half-time.

Powered by Sandilands' ruck dominance and Hasleby's clearance work, Fremantle used the corridor with purpose and had plenty of goal-scoring options in the forward 50 as eight Dockers scored goals.

Fremantle twice moved out to three-goal-plus leads during the second term but each time they looked like going on with it, Carlton replied, the Blues relying heavily on Waite to give them a target as Fevola was on and off the ground and Eddie Betts well held by Steven Dodd.

Carlton was its own worst enemy in the third quarter as Fremantle extended the lead by two points despite having four less scoring shots.

The Blues dominated the first 10 minutes but couldn't capitalise on the scoreboard as they scored five straight behinds before Fremantle waltzed down the other end and Dean Solomon snapped truly.

Fremantle moved out to a 21-point lead when David Mundy scored his first for the night, but some desperate efforts in defence by the Blues prevented the Dockers moving further ahead and a late goal to Carlton first-gamer Chris Yarran gave his side a sniff at the final break.

Murphy's second looked like it may have sealed the contest, but Carlton pressed forward from then on, the Dockers holding on for a stirring win that puts them level with Carlton on pointsand outside the eight on percentage.
