Preview: Hawthorn v Carlton

VENUE & TIME: MCG, Saturday 2 May, 2.10pm (AEST)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 155, Hawthorn 53, Carlton 102
LAST TIME: Hawthorn 24.15 (159) def Carlton 12.9 (81), Round 22 2008 at Etihad Stadium

WALKING WOUNDED: Three members of Hawthorn's premiership line-up, Brent Guerra (hamstring), Stephen Gilham (knee) and Michael Osborne (hamstring) will need to pass fitness tests to play this week. Grant Birchall (broken thumb) is another week or two away from resuming while Trent Croad (foot), Rick Ladson (knee), Clinton Young (hamstring) and Xavier Ellis (foot) face longer spells on the sidelines. Chris Johnson is the latest addition to the Blues' injury list and will miss up to four weeks with a quad strain. Shaun Grigg faces a fitness test on his injured ankle though Sam Jacobs, after initially being diagnosed with a minor thigh injury, now apparently has a more serious six-week foot injury. The rest of the Blues' injured brigade including Andrew Walker (shoulder), Robert Warnock (stress fractures) and Adam Bentick (knee) are out for the medium to long-term.

FORM: The Hawks are holding down ninth place on the ladder with two wins from five matches following last Saturday's 18-point win over West Coast in Launceston. Carlton rebounded from successive losses to Essendon and Sydney by thumping the Western Bulldogs by 43 points at Etihad Stadium last Sunday to jump to third place on the ladder at three-and-two.

WHO'S HOT: In just his fifth senior outing Garry Moss picked up 24 possessions against the Eagles in Launceston and scored four of the Hawks' 11 goals for the match. The 20-year-old had an eye-catching 25 touches the week before in the loss to Port Adelaide. The Blues were well-served against the Bulldogs by their brilliant trio of No.1 picks, Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer. Kreuzer was the most influential big man on the ground with 17 disposals, 14 hitouts and four tackles, and Murphy the best small man. Gibbs matched Murphy's 25 possessions and dominated the corridor. All three scored important, timely goals.

WE THINK: This will be Carlton's best opportunity in ages to stop a Hawthorn winning streak that extends back to 2005. The Hawks' winning margin over that stretch is a handsome 51 points. Taking part on Saturday will be the four joint leaders on the AFL goalkicking table - Eddie Betts, Brendan Fevola, Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin. Three of those four are entitled to be disappointed with their return of 14 goals after five rounds. Franklin is overdue for a really big one and his likely opponent, the improving Paul Bower will need to be at his best, while Roughead will take plenty of confidence from his bag of six against Carlton in the NAB Cup. Fevola has the incentive of being triple-teamed against the Hawks when on 99 goals in Round 22 last year. This is another big test for the Blues, but the Hawks, though undermanned, may be too strong. Hawthorn by 10 points.
Q4 33:20 - This will go down as one of the best games of the year and definitely one worthy of watching again and again. Congratulations to the Hawks who ramp up their premiership defence with a stirring win.
Q4 33:20 - The siren sounds and Hawthorn have defeated a heart broken Carlton by 4 points. Fevola is inconsolable but he was outstanding for his team.
Q4 32:45 - Hawthorn have been let off the hook. Can they hold onto the ball long enough?

Q4 28:45 - Stevens kicks to Fevola who doesn't mark. The kick is sent to the goal square but the desperate Hawthorn defence punches it through.
Q4 27:20 - The Blues are on fire and the Hawks are desperately clinging on. Judd goes to Fevola but he is spoilt in his marking attempt. Murphy wins the ball he snaps but misses. It is a 6-point ball game.

Q3 24:55 - The Blues have a case of the yips at the moment with Marc Murphy missing a shot he would normally drill.
Q3 23:10 - Judd handballs over the top to O'Hailpin who fumbles it. A quick kick is scrambled by Betts, but it bounces the wrong way and a behind results.
Q3 19:45 - Murphy kicks to Fevola who marks well overhead on the lead. From 45 metres out Fevola can only manage to register a minor score.
Q3 17:30 - Cloke is having a shocker for the Blues. He has been costly with his handling and disposal.
Q3 16:45 - Mitchell runs through the middle and delivers the ball with pin point accuracy to Williams. From 50 metres out directly in front, Williams kicks the Hawks to a 15-point lead.
Q3 15:20 - Dew kicks long, which does not surprise anyone. Franklin dives like a slips fielder and takes the mark deep in the pocket. Buddy registers his first score for the match but it's only a behind.
Q3 13:30 - The Carlton defence is working overtime with Hawthorn continually pressing. The desperation by Brown in attack for the Hawks will no doubt impress coach Clarkson.
Q3 11:10 - Roughead has a chance to make it 7. He plays on, puts the ball onto the boot, but it is a poor kick. It sneaks in for a behind and Hawthorn leads by 8.
Q3 09:55 - Carlton has two in a row. After winning the clearance the Blues win the free. It is belted into the forward line where Eddie Betts waits for the crumbs and kicks the goal. Hawks only lead by 7 points.
Q3 08:35 - It seems that there is no justice in this world. After all of Hawthorn's misses the Blues run the ball down. Fevola gets it, he kicks around the corner and kicks his fourth goal!

Q3 01:40 - The Hawks have won the first clearance. Bateman runs hard to get to the end of the pass and takes the mark. His shot at goal misses, however, with the Hawks now leading by 10 points.
Q3 00:01 - The third quarter has started. If the second half is as good as the first was we will be talking about this game for a while.
Q2 30:25 - The siren sounds for half-time and it's fair to say that everyone associated with this match needs a breather. We have seen the best half of footy this season with the Hawks leading by 9 points.

Q2 25:00 - Eddie Betts has the free 25 metres out. Much like a professional foul in soccer, it was either give the free or Betts gets the goal. It doesn't make a difference with Betts kicking the goal anyway!

Hawks outgun Blues
In a sensational shootout at the MCG on Saturday, key forwards Jarryd Roughead and Brendan Fevola scored eight apiece as Hawthorn held on to edge Carlton by just four points in the game of the season so far.

Fevola had the chance to deliver the Blues' first win over the Hawks in their past six meetings when he lined up for his ninth goal from a set shot just 25 metres out inside the final minute of the match with the Blues five points down.

But his kick grazed the inside of the goalpost and the Hawks were able to soak up the precious remaining seconds to record their third win for the season - 16.10 (106) to 15.12 (102).

The Blues looked down and out when they trailed by 25 points at the 21 minute mark of the final term but stormed back into contention when the never-say-die Fevola landed his seventh and eighth after an earlier snap from a hobbling Kade Simpson who played out the match despite sustaining a nasty cork in the opening term.

Roughead was imperious for the Hawks and too strong for a host of opponents while his more celebrated partner up forward, Lance Franklin kicked two important final-term goals but was otherwise well-beaten on the day by Paul Bower.

The respective skippers had outstanding games. Chris Judd racked up a team-high 33 touches for the Blues and Sam Mitchell a match-high 35 for the Hawks.

Buoyed by a bag of six against the Blues in the NAB Cup, Roughead had four on the board by quarter-time, all from contested marks and set shots that split the middle.

The powerhouse 22-year-old totally outpointed Bret Thornton for three goals and reeled-in a super one-hander after Setanta O'hAilpin was shifted onto him for his fourth.

The Blues dominated the second quarter but could make no headway on the scoreboard.

From 19 inside 50s they could manage only four goals - two to Fevola - a tally the Hawks matched from just six penetrations of their own attacking 50.

Roughead scored two of the Hawks' majors, one from a scuff off the ground from close range and the second a gift from an errant kickout by Thornton, for a personal tally of six to half-time.

Hawthorn's in-form youngster Garry Moss scored the first goal of the second half to open up a 19-point break, the biggest of the match to that stage.

But the Blues responded with a super boundary line snap from Fevola who celebrated by taunting the adjacent Hawks members, and a follow-up snap from Eddie Betts.

When Fevola landed his fifth after the siren courtesy of a pinpoint pass from Judd, the Blues had edged to within one point.

Having won the final term in all of their five previous outings this season, the Blues would have been confident of their ability to run out the contest.

That confidence was dented when Roughead outbodied Thornton for the first goal of the final term and Franklin gave Bower the slip to mark and convert sensationally from the intersection of the boundary line and the 50 metre mark at the Punt Road end.

Follow-up goals to the same pair helped to create a 25-point break entering time-on and the contest appeared all but over.

Simpson's snap seemed academic, but the alarm bells started ringing and pulses started racing when Fevola scored again from a dish-off by Betts in the 23rd minute and marked strongly for another goal with 27 minutes on the clock.

His final shot at the 32 minute mark after another powerful mark over Robert Campbell appeared certain to bring up full points before fading late to clip the post.
