Preview: Western Bulldogs v Carlton

VENUE & TIME: Etihad Stadium, Sunday 26 April, 2.10pm (AEST)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 135: Carlton 47, Bulldogs 84, Drawn 4
LAST TIME: Carlton 18.18 (126) d Bulldogs 15.8 (98) at Etihad Stadium, Round 18, 2008

WALKING WOUNDED: The Dogs could again be without reigning Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney due to the knee injury that caused him to miss last week's loss to West Coast in Perth but star forward Robert Murphy could come in for his first game of the season. However the Dogs will definitely be without 2001 Brownlow Medallist Jason Akermanis due to a one-match suspension for tripping. The Blues could regain promising defender Michael Jamison from a shoulder injury but Andrew Walker (knee), Robbie Warnock (foot), Darren Pfeiffer (shoulder) and Adam Bentick (knee) remain sidelined.

FORM: Both teams head into this game coming off disappointing defeats. The Dogs suffered their first loss of the season last week - at the hands of West Coast in Perth - while the Blues have now lost two in a row to firstly Essendon and then Sydney in Sydney last week after making a great start to the season by winning their first two matches against Richmond and Brisbane.

WHO'S HOT: Talented Western Bulldogs youngster Shaun Higgins has taken his game to a new level so far this season. Playing increasingly as a midfielder, Higgins has averaged 23 disposals in the first four matches and has been the Dogs' best player in the past two matches. Carlton goalsneak Eddie Betts is another of the AFL's big improvers this season. After kicking just 25 goals in 18 matches last season, Betts has already kicked 13 goals in just four matches this season and is emerging as an early Coleman Medal contender.

WE THINK: The Bulldogs might be coming off their second trip to Perth in the first month of the season and their first loss but they deserve to start warm favourites here despite having lost their past two matches against the Blues. Carlton, after a great start to the season which saw its fans talking premierships, have come back to earth with a thud with successive losses to Essendon and Sydney - both far inferior opponents to Rodney Eade's Bulldogs. The on-going heel problems of spearhead Brendan Fevola remain a concern while the Bulldogs are more than capable of matching the Blues in their strongest area - midfield- while the Blues' lightweight defence will struggle to cope with the Bulldogs' array of attacking options. Western Bulldogs by 30 points.
Q4 31:01 - The Carlton Blues 21.7.133 defeat the Western Bulldogs 13.12.90. A good win to the young Blues and another worrying loss for the Bulldogs.
Q4 30:45 - Thankfully the siren sounds bringing an end to the 'junk time' of the last 5 minutes. The Blues run out winners by 43 points and will finish the round in 3rd position.
Q4 28:58 - Johnson pinned on the boundary line passes off deep to Picken who has a fly from 50 metres out. The ball does not have the carry and is collected by the Blues' defence.
Q4 26:27 - The heat has gone out of the game, Carlton lead by 43 points and the Bulldogs will be looking for somewhere to hide for the second week in a row.
Q4 23:25 - The Blues have slowed it down, and the Dogs have decided to add some respectability to their score. Johnson with another goal has four for the match.
Q4 21:47 - Another quick centre clearance from Hill, the big man puts the ball to boot from over 50 metres out. The ball comes off hands and is rushed through for a minor score.
Q4 20:16 - Hill gets the ball quickly to Johnson who goes back and kicks his third. This is nothing but window dressing.
Q4 19:26 - The Bulldogs looked weary last week in the west, today they look blown away.
Q4 17:23 - The Blues are 56 points in front, the only question left to be answered is how far in front they will be when the siren sounds.
Q4 15:26 - Kreuzer to Gibbs who runs into an open goal and Carlton has it's 21st goal. The Dogs are demoralised.
Q4 12:56 - The Dogs' back line is in disarray as the Blues' line up for target practice. Houlihan plays a little give and go with Wiggins and then drives the ball through for another goal.
Q4 10:26 - The ball comes straight out of the Dogs' back line. The Blues are full of running and pin-point passing. Fevola takes the ball just outside the 50 and then passes off to Kreuzer who has his second.
Q4 08:56 - The Doggies really need goals and can only score behinds, Hill kicks their 11th of the afternoon.
Q4 06:55 - The blues are too good Betts has another good mark in the forward line and quickly passes off to Kreuzer who is lurking in the goal square and who kicks the ball through.
Q4 05:25 - Every time the dogs get one the Blues answer straight back. Another O'hAilpin assist sees Betts mark the ball directly in front. Betts now has his 101st career goal.
Q4 03:40 - Mitch Hahn has a chance to add 6 points to the Dogs' score. It is a long, long kick but it has the carry - goal Bulldogs.
Q4 02:25 - The Dogs look tired, their runners aren't running in fact some of them look rooted in stone.
Q4 00:56 - Carlton are home as Betts scores his second of the game and the 100th of his career.
Q4 00:00 - The Blues win the first clearance of the term as Stevens gets to the ball and sends it forward.
Q3 28:47 - The term ends with a slight Bulldog revival, however they still trail by 27 points and the Blues look unwilling to surrender their lead. Carlton 15.7.97 lead the Western Bulldogs 10.10.70.
Q3 28:13 - Lake takes a good mark up front, inexplicably he passes off to Gilbee who loses the ball. Carlton run it forward and Gibbs lets fly from long range - 1 point.
Q3 27:18 - A horrible kick in from the Blues sees the ball end up with Johnson who calmly goes back and kicks the goal.
Q3 25:47 - Brian Lake has another behind to the Dogs, but they are still 31 points behind.
Q3 23:19 - The Blues are not stopping. They get the ball to Cloke who takes the mark 30 metres out. The former Magpie goes back and hits the post, 1 behind.
Q3 21:46 - The Doggies stay in touch through Boyd who kicks a long goal. The Bulldogs cut the Blues lead to 32 points.
Q3 20:15 - The Blues are storming forward, this time a running Houlihan pushes the ball wide. Carlton's lead increases.
Q3 18:00 - Too little, too late as Carazzo adds another 6 points to the Blues score and another nail in the Doggies' coffin.
Q3 16:48 - It seems like the message has gone out to the Doggies, they are full of running trying to bridge this 31 point gap.
Q3 14:15 - The pace has eased in the game, both teams are trying to recover from a hectic first half.
Q3 11:14 - Giansiracusa takes a good mark over Armfield. From a tight angle deep in the forward pocket the Bulldogs' veteran kicks a much needed goal.
Q3 08:48 - Once again the Blues are keeping the Ball deep in their attack. From a standing start Gibbs slams the ball goalward. Off-line 1 behind, Carlton lead by 37 points.
Q3 05:44 - 500 and now 501 - AFL goals, Fevola found himself on the end of a series of smooth passes and from point black, directly in front - he stood and delivered. Goal Carlton.
Q3 03:17 - It is tit for tat at Etihad this afternoon. Brad Johnson takes an uncontested mark 30 metres out directly in front and kicks a goal for the Bulldogs.
Q3 02:10 - Carlton goes forward again and they have their 13th goal and Fevola has his 2nd of the game and the 50th of his career.
Q3 00:00 - The siren sounds and the ball is bounced, THe Blues jump out of the centre courtesy of Kreuzer, the ball finds Judd who finds Cloke - goal to the Blues within the first 30 seconds.
Q2 34:20 - The term finishes with the Blues 24 points to the good. The Dogs are still off target but the Blues really stepped it up that term, Carlton 11.3.69 lead the Western Bulldogs 6.9.45.
Q2 32:28 - O'hAilpin finds Russell who kicks another Carlton goal. That ball was run from deep in defence all the down field and O'hAilpin was once again left unmarked.
Q2 30:50 - Gibbs finds O'hAilpin who zigs and zags and then snaps a behind. The blues lead by 18 points in the shadows of half time.
Q2 27:56 - A bum one second a hero the next, O'hAilpin soccers the ball through for a goal - Carlton will not give up, they led by 17 points.
Q2 26:00 - Finally the dogs get a chance to stem the tide. Higgins takes a mark at true centre half forward. Higgins goes back and drills through the Dogs' 6th goal.
Q2 25:00 - Houlihan takes an uncontested mark on the flank, 40 metres out. He kicks truly - Goal to the Blues .
Q2 22:53 - The Dogs spent a lot of petrol early this term, getting back into the game. however if they cannot reign in the Blues all their good work will be undone.
Q2 21:48 - Kade Simpson makes it two in a row as he drives a free kick home. Carlton lead by 11 points.
Q2 19:00 - Simpson puts the Blues back in front as he slots home a quick reply to Giansiracusa's goal.
Q2 17:26 - The blues will not give up and Murphy has a running shot from a long, long way out. He has the distance and the accuracy - goal to the Blues.
Q2 14:47 - Oh'Ailpin with a brain fade throws the ball away after a free kick has been awarded. From the resulting 50 Giansiracusa kicks the easiest of goals while the Dogs jeer Setanta.

Q2 11:25 - The Dogs are running. Johnson with a chance to tie the scores up. He misses and the Bulldogs trail by 5 points.
Q2 09:26 - Hahn to Griffen who is outnumbered three to one. He hand passes over his head to Picken - with a little give and go Picken goes back to Griffen who snaps a Goal. Great play Dogs.
Q2 07:24 - Kreuzer is out pointing big Minson both in the ruck and also around the ground.
Q2 05:16 - Minson takes a good mark up forward. He moves the ball forward until Boyd picks up the loose ball - he twist one way the the other and then finally kicks the Dogs first goal of the term.
Q2 04:23 - Fevola with a chance to add to the Carlton score, he doesn't make the distance and the ball comes off hands for a behind.
Q2 03:20 - From the centre clearance the Dog's sweep the ball forward and the result - 1 point although it was rushed.

Q1 29:28 - Quarter time Carlton 4.1.25 lead the Western Bulldogs 1.6.12.
Q1 29:27 - So the first quarter ends with the Blues 13 points up on the Bulldogs. It was a patchy term where the Bulldogs wasted chances in front of goal and the Blues turned the ball over far too easily.
Q1 27:52 - Harbrow and Betts are dueling on the boundary line, the Carlton excitement machine turns Harbrow inside out and kicks an amazing goal. The 99th of his career.
Q1 26:30 - The Dogs are keeping the ball bottled up in their forward half, finally Higgins has a clean possession 35 metres out on a 50 degree angle, he pulls it wide for a behind.
Q1 23:32 - Grant has the mark and a 50 metre penalty courtesy of Bower. The youngster has a chance to kick a goal with his very first kick, it is not to be as it hits the post - so close.
Q1 22:02 - We are still trading one goal square for the other as the ball ricochets from one end to end.
Q1 20:21 - Fevola has decided it's time to play rather than try to milk free kicks. He takes a good mark and then slots home his first of the match.
Q1 18:51 - Fevola has the ball and unselfishly passes off to Cloke who is loitering in the square. Cloke does not miss these - goal Carlton.
Q1 17:03 - As a direct result of the free kick Eagleton has a flying shot that goes wide. 1 point to the Dogs.
Q1 16:04 - Fevola is playing angry today. He gives the Umpire a spray and gives away a free 100 metres off the ball. Time to drag him?
Q1 14:21 - The ball is being held in the Bulldogs' forward line. The pressure finally tells as Hill takes a long snap and drills home the goal. Doggies back in front.

Q1 07:52 - Wiggins takes a strong mark and will turn around and try to give the Blues the lead. The kick does not do the mark justice and the Umpire raises a single digit. Bulldogs 3 Carlton 1.
Q1 05:40 - A terrible kick in and the ball goes straight down Gilbee's throat. Gilbee goes back and fails to make the Blues pay as he misses wide. The dogs are wasting chances early.
Q1 04:32 - The Dogs are full of running this afternoon, they swing into attack again and once again they are off target. Higgins is the culprit this time.

Blues back in town
Brendan Fevola became only the third Carlton player to kick 500 goals as the Blues' re-discovered their kicking boots to thrash the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Blues went into the clash coming off two successive defeats in which poor kicking for goal had proved costly but on Sunday everything Brett Ratten's team touched turned to gold as the disappointing Bulldogs' were swept aside 21.7 (133) to 13.12 (90).

The result means both teams now have three wins after five rounds but while the Blues' season is well and truly back on track and a first finals appearance since 2001 beckons on this form, the highly-rated Dogs have lost two in a row and face league leaders St Kilda in a Sunday twilight blockbuster next week at Etihad Stadium.

And given the unbeaten Saints are only the second team since 1911 to have a percentage greater than 200 after five rounds, the Bulldogs could be staring at three successive losses - something the club avoided throughout all of last season when it reached the preliminary final.

The Blues' 2009 season to date has been one of ups and downs after the team had been tipped to be the big improvers this season - it's membership campaign slogan remember was 'They know we are coming' - and after wins in the first fortnight over Richmond and Brisbane everything was on track.

But after recent losses to Essendon and Sydney, this match shaped as the biggest test yet of the Blues' supposed improvement in 2009.

And Brett Ratten's team passed it with flying colours.

The most pleasing aspect of the Blues' performance, apart from their much improved kicking for goal, was that this win over one of the AFL's best teams was not achieved on the back of skipper Chris Judd and vice-captain Nick Stevens.

Instead it was the Blues' young brigade led by their three No.1 draft picks in Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs and ever-improving ruckman Matthew Kreuzer who were the team's prime movers while the club's often maligned defence held up superbly against one of the league's highest scoring teams with Bret Thornton, Paul Bower and the returning Michael Jamison all solid contributors.

And 2007 best and fairest winner Andrew Carazzo, in his first game for the season after breaking his arm in pre-season, did a disciplined job in limiting the influence of Bulldogs' playmaker Lindsay Gilbee while even Irish bad boy Setanta O'hAilpin made some telling contributions in his return match.

O'hAilpin even kicked a goal in the second term and celebrated with Cameron Cloke, the man whom he was suspended for punching and kicking during a pre-season match.

The Blues' could hardly have been more exciting on Sunday and finished off their good work in midfield with aplomb as the Bulldogs looked as though they had not recovered from last week's loss to West Coast in Perth - their second trip west in the first month.

After kicking 7.10 and 3.12 to half-time in the past fortnight, the Blues' slammed on 11.3 to the main break on Sunday to seize control of the game with Kade Simpson and Ryan Houlihan nailing three difficult set shots between them in the second term.

But even those great goals paled alongside Fevola's incredible snap over his shoulder early in the third term as he joined current club president Stephen Kernahan (738 goals) and Harry 'Soapy' Vallence (722 goals) as the only Carlton players to kick 500 career goals on a day to remember for Blues' fans.
