Swans outlast Blues
By Steve Orme at the SCG, Sportal
Sydney has continue its recent dominance over Carlton scoring a convincing 17-point win at a sun drenched SCG on Saturday.
Sporting replicas of the guernsey worn in the club's 1909 VFL Grand Final triumph over the Blues, the Swans weathered an early storm before dominating the middle quarters to post a 12.12 (84) to 9.13 (67) victory in front of 30,834 fans.
Jarrad McVeigh starred for the home side who made it 12-straight wins over the Blues, kicking three goals and winning a points decision over Chris Judd in a best-on-ground display.
While McVeigh was a clear standout, the Swans shared the spoils in the absence of Barry Hall (groin) with nine players chipping in with majors in what was a trademark team performance.
It wasn't pretty for the Blues who had no answer for Sydney's stifling brand of footy, backing up their shock loss to Essendon with an uninspired display.
Eddie Betts was a shining light for the visitors booting three majors at critical stages, but his efforts were not enough to get his side home.
Judd (30 possessions, one goal) was brilliant early but failed thereafter to have his usual impact, while Brendon Fevola had a quiet afternoon kicking 1.4.
Despite their obvious dominance in the first term - the Blues enjoyed 54 possessions more than the Swans - the visitors' lead was a slender five points at the first change as both sides traded three majors.
It was more of the same to start the second term as the Blues continually squandered their opportunities, and the Swans made the most of Carlton's generosity kicking all four goals to take a handy 14-point buffer into the main break.
Jarred Moore and debutant Kristin Thornton did the early damage before McVeigh kicked two majors in as many minutes to hand his side their first lead of the afternoon.
McVeigh also did a terrific job on Judd in the second term - the Carlton superstar responsible for three uncharacteristic turnovers in quick succession - as the hosts began to dictate terms.
The Swans should have extended their lead further as Jude Bolton, Ted Richards, Luke Ablett and Ed Barlow all missed kickable chances in the first five minutes.
Marc Murphy's major threatened to spark something for the Blues but it only served to spark the Swans who answered with three straight to stretch their lead beyond five goals.
Late majors to Eddie Betts and Cameron Cloke trimmed the deficit to 19 points at the final change to keep the Blues in the contest.
Betts opened the scoring in the final term to cut the deficit to three goals but it was not to be for the Blues, who last tasted victory in Sydney way back in 1993.
